What Add Page Numbers Can Do

  • 11 Precision Alignments

Place numbers at top, bottom, corners, centre, outer margins, or mirrored for facing pages.

  • Flexible Number Schemes

    Arabic (1, 2, 3), Roman (i, ii, iii), alphabetic (a, b, c), or custom templates like "Page {n} of {p}".

  • Explicit Cover Handling

Three separate choices, not one toggle that quietly does two things: number the cover, skip it and start the count at page 2, or skip it but keep it in the count.

  • Font & Color Controls

Match document typography with customizable font sizes, families, and colors.

  • Preview in Page Units

The live preview is drawn in the page's own point space, so the margins, font size, capsule and rotation you see are the ones written to the PDF.

Tools & Settings Reference

Number Format (Page {n} of {p})
Use {n} for the printed number and {p} or {total} for the document's page count. Anything else in the box is printed as you type it.
Numbering Style (Arabic / Roman / Alphabetic)
Select Arabic (1, 2), Lower Roman (i, ii), Upper Roman (I, II), or letters (a, b / A, B). After z, letters go on aa, bb, the way PDF page labels and Word count them.
Start Numbering at
Any whole number from 1 to 999,999, typed in, so a second volume can continue at page 347 or a Bates run can start at 1200.
Cover Page (Page 1)
Number it, skip it and let page 2 start the count, or skip it while it still counts — so page 2 prints 2.
Bates Zero-Padding
Pads the number to a fixed width (001, 0001). Digits only, so it is hidden for the Roman and alphabetic styles.
Horizontal / Vertical Margin (pt)
Distance from the page edge in points. Under 15pt the tool warns you that some printers crop that close to the edge.
Renumber after skipped pages
Off leaves a gap where you unticked a page (1, 2, -, 4, 5). On closes it up (1, 2, -, 3, 4).
Update PDF Navigation Sidebar Labels
Writes the numbering into the PDF page-label table so a viewer's page list shows the same numbers as the pages, skipped pages and padding included. A label can only carry text before the number, so anything after {n} is left out of the list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Drop the PDF in, pick a position such as bottom centre, and choose a format: plain 1, 2, 3, "Page 1 of 10", Roman numerals or letters. Decide whether the cover page is numbered, skipped, or skipped but still counted, check the live preview, and download. The numbers are written into the PDF itself, in your browser, without uploading the file.

Add a second numbering scheme. Each scheme has its own page scope, numeral style, start number and label template, so you can give pages 1-8 lower Roman and the rest Arabic starting from 1. Schemes are checked in order and the first one that covers a page wins.

Yes. The horizontal and vertical margin sliders set the distance from the page edge in points (1 point = 1/72 inch), and the live preview moves with them so you can see the number clear the existing footer before you export.

The total number of pages in the document, which is what "Page 3 of 40" normally means. It is not the number of pages the current scheme happens to target — so an odd-pages scheme over a 40-page file still reads "of 40".

Yes. The position is worked out on the page as a reader sees it, with the page's own /Rotate applied, so "bottom centre" is the bottom centre on screen and the digits sit upright. On a cropped page the margins are measured from the visible edge, not from the paper that was cropped away.

Usually because the page is not covered by any scheme, or you unticked it in the grid: the header above the page grid shows how many pages will actually receive a number, worked out the same way the export works it out. Characters are rarely the cause. Curly quotes, dashes and the ellipsis draw in the built-in fonts, and Polish, Czech, Turkish, Greek, Cyrillic and signs such as ₹ are drawn in Noto Sans. Only scripts such as Devanagari, Arabic, Hebrew, Thai or Chinese, and emoji, cannot be drawn; the tool names those characters as you type.
