How to Edit a PDF Online Free
Edit PDF text, fill forms, sign, redact and reorganise pages in your browser. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is installed.
How to Use PDF Editor
- 1
Open Your PDF
Drag a PDF onto the editor or click to browse. The file is opened by your own browser, so it is never uploaded and no account is needed to start.
- 2
Edit the Existing Text
Switch to Edit Text and click any run of the document’s own words to retype it in place, or use Find & Replace to change every occurrence across all pages at once.
- 3
Add Text, Images and Signatures
Place new text boxes, freehand drawing, images, e-signatures, business stamps, clickable links, rectangles, circles and lines anywhere on the page.
- 4
Redact, Fill Forms and Watermark
Cover confidential content with true redaction, type into the PDF’s existing form fields, and apply a text or image watermark to every page or a chosen range.
- 5
Edit PDF Pages
Insert, delete, duplicate, rotate and reorder pages from the thumbnail panel, and edit the bookmark outline, attachments and document metadata.
- 6
Export and Download
Export the finished PDF straight to your device. Anything that could not be written exactly as shown on screen is listed on the result screen rather than dropped silently.
What PDF Editor Can Do
🔒Nothing Leaves Your Device
The PDF is opened, edited and re-written entirely inside this browser tab. No upload, no server copy, and no account required to use it.
✏️12 Editing Tools
Add text, retype existing text, freehand draw, eraser, image, signature, stamp, link, rectangle, circle, line and redact.
📝In-Place Text Replacement
Retype a run of the PDF’s own text. Where the editor can find the original words in the page it removes them and writes yours in the document’s own font; where it cannot, yours cover them and the export says the old wording is still in the file.
🔍Find & Replace Across Every Page
Search the whole document case-insensitively and rewrite every match in one pass, with a live count of occurrences before you commit.
⬛Real Redaction
A redacted page is replaced with a flat image and the original page is deleted from the file, so the covered content is genuinely gone — at the cost of that page’s text no longer being selectable.
📄Full Page Management
Insert, delete, duplicate, rotate and reorder pages, and edit the bookmark outline and embedded attachments alongside them.
🗒️PDF Form Filling
Type into the text, checkbox, radio and dropdown fields the document already carries, and optionally flatten them so the answers cannot be changed again.
💧Watermark, Stamps & Metadata
Apply a text or image watermark with its own opacity, rotation and page scope, add Approved, Rejected, Draft, Confidential or Reviewed stamps, and rewrite the title, author, subject and keywords.
💾Auto-Save Draft Recovery
Saves your work locally so a closed tab can be picked up again. Passwords and attachments are deliberately never written to a draft.
📚Layer Hierarchy & Undo/Redo
Reorder, lock and hide objects. Undo covers page inserts, deletes and reorders as well as annotations.
Tools & Settings Reference
- Edit Text Mode
- Retype a run of the document’s own text. It is written in the document’s own font when that font has every character you typed, otherwise in the closest of Helvetica, Times or Courier, or in Noto Sans for Polish, Turkish, Greek, Cyrillic and similar letters. The original words are removed from the page where the editor can find them; where it cannot, they stay under a patch and the export says so.
- Find & Replace
- Matches case-insensitively across every page and shows how many occurrences it found before you replace them. Each replacement goes through the same in-place text mechanism, so the same font and removal rules apply.
- Redaction Tool
- Replaces the whole page with a 2.5x image and deletes the original page from the file, so the covered content cannot be recovered. Every other piece of text on that page stops being selectable too, and the page’s links, comments and form fields go with it.
- Page Tools
- Insert a blank page, delete, duplicate, rotate or drag to reorder. All five are covered by undo, so a mis-drop is one keystroke away from being put back.
- Form Fields & Flatten
- Lists the fields the PDF already declares and lets you type into them. Flatten writes the answers into the page itself, which stops them being edited again — leave it off if the form still needs to be filled in by someone else.
- Watermark
- Text or image, with its own colour, size, opacity, rotation and position, applied to every page, only the current page, or a custom range you pick from the thumbnails.
- Business Stamps
- Stamp documents with Approved, Rejected, Draft, Confidential or Reviewed marks.
- Layer Management
- Bring forward, send backward, lock, or toggle visibility of annotations. A hidden layer is not drawn and cannot be clicked.
- Document Metadata
- Rewrite the title, author, subject and keywords stored inside the file. These are what a search index and a file manager read, and they survive being emailed on.
- Password & Permissions
- The open password is what actually keeps a reader out. Print and copy restrictions are advisory flags that a cooperating reader honours and any other tool can ignore.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, and no account is needed to start. Every editing tool on this page is available to everyone — nothing is held back behind a paid tier, and the tool never stamps a watermark or a trial notice onto your file. What the free tier limits is volume: exporting a finished PDF counts as one operation against a daily allowance of 10 per device, which resets at midnight UTC. Pro removes the cap. Editing, previewing and undoing cost nothing at all; only the export is counted.
No. This is a web page, not an installer — there is no .exe, no .dmg, no extension and no sign-up wall. Opening the page is the whole setup. The editing itself runs on WebAssembly inside the tab, which is why it works without a desktop application and without sending your document anywhere. The practical difference from an installed editor is that a very large file is limited by your browser’s available memory rather than by your disk.
Choose Edit Text and click the line you want to change. The editor reads the position, size, colour and baseline of that run and the font the document set it in, and writes your replacement in the same place. Where the document embeds that font with every character you typed, the line keeps its own face; otherwise the closest of Helvetica, Times or Courier is used (or Noto Sans for letters such as ł, ş, Greek or Cyrillic) and the width shifts slightly. Where the editor can find the original words in the page they are removed; where it cannot, your text covers them and the export tells you the old wording is still in the file. Use Redact when the previous text must certainly go.
Yes. The Find panel searches every page case-insensitively, lists each occurrence with its page number, and shows a running count so you know the scope before you act. Replace All then rewrites every match in a single pass. Each replacement goes through the same in-place text mechanism described above, so the same font and removal rules apply, and the export lists any page where the old wording could not be removed.
A black rectangle leaves the text underneath accessible to anyone who selects it or searches the file. Redact works differently: the whole page is rendered to a flat 2.5x image that takes its place, and the original page is deleted from the file together with everything only it used, so the covered content is not in the file at all. The trade-off is real and worth knowing: that page becomes a picture, so none of its text is selectable or searchable afterwards, and its links and form fields go with it. If the page cannot be rasterised, the export says so instead of pretending.
Yes — page changes are part of the same editor rather than a separate tool. From the thumbnail panel you can insert a blank page, delete the current one, duplicate it, rotate it, or drag a page to a new position. All of it is covered by undo and redo, including reorders, so a mis-drop is recoverable. A deleted page is removed from the file for real, not just hidden. Bookmarks you add follow their pages when pages move, and one that pointed at a page you delete is removed with it, with a note saying so.
Yes. The Forms panel lists the fields the document already declares — text boxes, checkboxes, radio groups and dropdowns — and you type your answers straight into them. On export you choose whether to leave the fields live or flatten them. Flattening writes the answers into the page so they cannot be edited again, which is what you want when returning a completed form; leave it off if the document still has to be filled in by someone after you.
Not with Edit Text, and it is worth being clear why. A scan is a picture of a page, so there are no text runs in the file for the editor to click into — Find & Replace has nothing to search either. What does work here is everything drawn on top: you can add text boxes, sign it, stamp it, redact areas and reorganise the pages. To get genuinely editable text out of a scan, run it through Scanned PDF to Text or PDF to Word first, both of which do character recognition, and bring the result back here if you still need to lay content over it.
Yes to all of them. There is no platform-specific build to pick, because there is no build to install: the same page runs on macOS, Windows, Linux, ChromeOS, and on tablets. Any current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari has the WebAssembly and Canvas support the editor needs. macOS users in particular tend to arrive looking for something Preview cannot do — retyping existing text, real redaction, or filling a form — and all three are here.
Your annotations, text edits, bookmarks, watermark, form entries and metadata are written to the browser’s own storage a moment after you stop working, along with the file itself, so reopening the editor offers to pick the session back up. Two things are left out on purpose: passwords, because a recovery draft is stored in plain text, and attachments, which are file handles the browser cannot save. Page inserts, deletes and reorders cannot be replayed from a draft either — the restore banner says so rather than putting your annotations back onto a layout that no longer exists. The draft, file included, is deleted from the browser as soon as you export the PDF or choose Discard.
