How to Split a PDF and Extract Pages

How to Use Split PDF

  1. 1

    Upload PDF Document

Select or drag the PDF document you wish to split into the workspace.

  2. 2

    Choose Split Strategy

Pick one of six modes: Every N Pages, Visual Cuts placed by hand between thumbnails, Extract / Ranges, Max Size per part, Into N Files, or On Blank Page.

  3. 3

    Choose How It Is Packaged

Split Parts gives each part as its own PDF, and a part can be a single page. 1 Page = 1 PDF bursts every page, and 1 Merged PDF puts everything back into one file. In Max Size mode, a part over the limit can become several files.

  4. 4

    Download Extracted Files

Download each part on its own, or tick the ones you want and take them as a ZIP.

What Split PDF Can Do

  • 6 Split Modes

Every N pages, hand-placed visual cuts, page ranges, a maximum size per part, a fixed number of files, or a cut at every blank page.

  • Visual Thumbnail Selector

Click thumbnails to toggle page inclusion, and drop scissor marks between them to cut exactly where you want.

  • Range Syntax With Real Validation

Type 1-5, 8, 11-14 and anything it cannot use is named on the spot instead of being silently ignored.

  • Organized ZIP Packaging

Bundles the parts you select into one archive, or hands you a single PDF directly when the split produced only one.

  • In-Memory Splitting

Splits the PDF in your browser using local CPU resources, so nothing is uploaded.

  • Complete Privacy

Process confidential tax forms and legal briefs without cloud exposure.

Tools & Settings Reference

Every N Pages
Cuts the document into chunks of N pages each.
Into N Files
The other way round: say how many files you want and the pages are divided evenly between them.
Extract / Ranges (e.g. 1-3, 5, 8-10)
Type page numbers or click thumbnails — the box and the grid stay in sync, and anything unusable in what you typed is reported underneath.
Visual Cuts
Click the scissors between two page cards to place a cut exactly there. Cuts survive a mode change; reordering pages clears them.
Output Packaging
Split Parts keeps your cuts. 1 Merged PDF and 1 Page = 1 PDF both ignore them by design, and the panel says so when one of those is selected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Comma-separated single pages and hyphenated intervals, so `1-4, 7, 10-15` works as you would expect. A range can be open at one end: `5-` runs from page 5 to the end, and `-3` is pages 1 to 3. Ordinary hyphens, en and em dashes, spaces and semicolons are all accepted, and a reversed range such as `5-2` is read as 2-5. With Split Parts, each range you type becomes its own file, in the order you typed it. Anything that cannot be used is listed underneath the box as you type: a page number past the end of the document, a token with two dashes, or text that is not a number. A range that only partly overruns the document is clamped and tells you what it read instead.

Choose the naming template: Part Index gives `Book_part1.pdf`, `Book_part2.pdf`; Page Range gives `Book_pages_1-10.pdf` using the page numbers from the original document, not the grid positions; and Custom lets you set your own prefix. Each part is named after the file its pages actually came from, which matters once you have added a second PDF to the queue.

Yes. Pages are copied whole, with their fonts and vector artwork intact, so print quality is identical to the original. The one exception is Max Size mode. A part over the limit is first re-saved more compactly, then cut into smaller files by page. Only a single page that is still over the limit, or an output that may not be cut, such as one merged PDF or one PDF per page, is re-rendered as images, and only when that makes it smaller. That does lose vector sharpness. A file can still end up over the limit, and the result says so. Every other mode is a straight copy.

Each output is a new document containing the pages you chose, so anything stored at document level rather than on a page does not come with it: bookmarks, the document metadata and attachments. Form fields on the pages you chose are the exception: they come with their pages and stay fillable, with any values already entered. The grid shows a bookmark badge on pages that are outline targets, which is there to help you find chapter starts, not a promise that the outline survives.

It depends on the protection. Split PDF has no password box, so a file that needs a password to open is refused, with advice to remove the password with Unlock PDF first. A file that opens but carries restrictions, such as no printing or copying, splits normally, and the parts do not carry those restrictions.
