Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. You can toggle Lossless WebP mode for pixel-perfect graphics or adjust the quality slider for maximum bandwidth savings.

Lossless, for anything with hard edges against transparency. Lossy WebP does support an alpha channel, but it compresses that channel separately from the colour data, so a crisp edge can pick up a faint halo where the two disagree. Logos, icons, screenshots and UI assets belong in lossless. Photographs, where every edge is soft anyway, are the case lossy WebP was designed for and where it beats both JPEG and PNG.

You get a still image. Cropping works by drawing the picture onto a canvas, and a canvas holds exactly one frame, so the animation is not carried through — the output is a single cropped frame, not a shorter animation. That is a real limitation rather than a setting you can change here. If you need to keep motion, crop the source animation in a video or GIF editor instead.

The tool checks before it commits. Canvas WebP encoding is missing in older Safari, and when a browser cannot honour the format it asks for, it quietly hands back a PNG instead — which is how you end up with a file named .webp that no viewer will open. PDFixel probes the browser with a one-pixel test encode first and falls back to a correctly named format rather than mislabelling the output. On any current browser you will simply get WebP.
